Bosham Cricket Club - Junior Training

The general consensus at the AGM and with other correspondence that I received was that the Club should continue to hold junior practice sessions on a Monday evening. I am very sorry to those that expressed a preference for another evening.

Junior Cricket practice at Bosham will commence on Monday 26 April and take place every week until at least the start of the school summer holidays or perhaps longer if there is sufficient demand.

The sessions will start at 6:30pm and finish at around 7:30pm.

Due to safety concerns the sessions will only take place in dry weather. If a session has to be cancelled due to rain or a wet pitch then a notice will be posted on the Club website.

Entry to and from the cricket ground is via Delling Close. Please enter and leave the ground with respect to our neighbours. For safety’s sake please drive slowly both in Delling Close and along the track to the ground. There will be young children walking and cycling to practice. Be vigilant when parking your vehicle. Irresponsible driving will not be tolerated by the Club.

The Club has entered two teams in the Sussex Cricket Western Area League this year.

The under-12's will play in the 2010 West Area Youth League Shield competition. Girls and boys who are under 12 years of age on 31 August 2009 are eligible for this team. This is a hard-ball competition. All matches are played on Sunday mornings and start at 9.30am.

The under-10's will also represent the Club in MKK Cup 2010 to be held on Sunday 11 July at Arundel Castle Cricket Club. Starting at 9am the kwik-cricket tournament will be played on the outfield prior to a Sussex T20 game against Surrey (2.40pm start). The team will all have free admission to the T20 game.

Please help us to plan ahead for all of the above games by notifying us as soon as possible of your child’s availability. We are likely to be oversubscribed for these matches and the Club will select teams equitably to ensure all children have an opportunity to play regardless of their ability.

It is important to wear the appropriate safety equipment when attending matches and training sessions. The Club will provide helmets, pads and gloves. Children are welcome to bring along their own equipment but please make sure it is clearly marked with their name.

All boys will also be required to wear an abdominal guard ("box"). Please make sure that your boy(s) turn-up to sessions wearing pants or a jock-strap. Boxer shorts do not work are not appropriate!

The cost of membership this year will be £35 for an individual and £60 for a family. This entitles the member to attend all of our training sessions.

I will circulate a joining form over the weekend and we will have copies available at the ground. We will require everyone that takes part in the training sessions to have completed the form and paid their membership fee. Please be patient on the first evening session while we undertake the administrative tasks of collecting the completed forms and money.

It has come to our attention that there is a problem with our booking at Game, Set and Match this evening. As a result we need to run our Bosham junior session between 5:30pm and 6:30pm.

I hope your child will be able to make the earlier start time.

As not everyone will be able to make the earlier time we are going to run an extra session tomorrow evening (Tuesday 30 March) between 6:00pm and 7:00pm for everyone that is able to attend.

This is an ideal opportunity to introduce new members to the Club. If you know anyone that might be interested in playing for us this season then please invite them along.

Indoor Nets for Bosham Junior Cricketers (girls and boys aged 8 - 13)

We have an exciting programme in store for our young cricketers in 2010. As many of you will know the Club has now signed a long lease on the ground just off Delling Close where our Monday junior cricket has been taking place for the past 2 years. We have an exciting development plan for our local communities and schools which will include training sessions, playing regular matches this season, improving the pitch at Delling Close, building brand new nets and starting work on building a Club House with good facilities. We will be writing to you all about these improvements and plans in the near future.

Meanwhile, to help our girls and boys make a confident start to the 2010 playing season, we have organised indoor nets at Game Set & Match (Beaver Trade Park, Quarry Lane, Chichester, PO19 8NY). The indoor sessions will be run by our qualified coaches and will include skills training in fielding, bowling, catching and a range of batting strokes. We will also have access to a bowling machine depending on how our players progress.

There will be a total of 6 training sessions, all at the Game Set & Match Indoor nets. Obviously we would like players to attend as many of these sessions as possible but we understand the busy schedules of our families so we will reinforce previously taught skills at regular intervals. The net sessions will take place on Mondays at 6pm - 7pm starting on Monday 22 February and ending on Monday 29 March.

The Club will provide bats, balls and other equipment but everyone is welcome to bring along their own kit. Boys will need to have their own abdominal protection (box) although the club has some spares. All Juniors (girls and boys) will need to wear trainers, shorts and or tracksuit bottoms and a loose shirt or T shirt. Although Game Set & Match is heated, a cricketing jumper or fleece top is advisable. Refreshments will be available but Juniors may wish to bring along their own water bottles.

Spaces are unfortunately limited and 16 places will be offered on a first come basis. The cost of the course of 6 sessions is £ 25. Please email us at juniors@boshamcc.co.uk with your address and we will send you the relevant forms which can be posted back or handed in at the nets on 22 February. Parent involvement is always helpful so parents, if you can help in any way, please let us know.

HCL: Compton vs Bosham

Result: Compton (24pts) beat Bosham (6pts) by 166 runs

Date: Sat 13th Jun 2009

Mark Middleton top scored with 56 runs and then went on to take four wickets for 10 runs as Compton thrashed division rivals Bosham by 145 runs.

Electing to bat first Compton posted a score of 212 that was below par compared to their previous innings at home this season. Early in the innings the Compton batsmen struggled to cope with Bosham bowlers and Shaw, Elms and Rosier all fell cheaply. At this stage of the game Bosham were on top. However, it was Middleton that held the innings together and with some big hitting contributions from Barclay (37), Turner (23) and Francis (26) helped to recover the situation for the home side.

In reply, Bosham slumped to 66 all out. Laurence Hembrow and Jim Callaghan were the only batsmen to make double figures as Bosham produced their worst batting performance for many seasons. After Turner made an initial impact by removing openers Barratt and Abbott it was the dependable Middleton who did the most damage claiming four wickets.

The result means Compton consolidate their position at the top of the table while Bosham slip down to seventh.

HCL: Bosham v Old Hambledonians

Chris Dean took a hat-trick in the final over to win the match for Old Hambledonians. Having taken the vital wicket of David Goodman in the 40th over Dean struck with the first three balls of the final over to leave Bosham 6 runs short of their target.

Batting first, on an Oaklands pitch that has now exhibited variable bounce for the last couple of games, Old Hambledonians posted a reasonable total of 173. Bosham were never really able to exert any real pressure on the batsmen and despite some reasonable containment the visitors were able to build some descent partnerships. Micheal Rooke was the pick of the Bosham bowlers ending the day with 5 wickets for 32 runs.

The Bosham reply started badly with Duncan Barratt, Jez Abbot and Will Gamon all giving away their wickets cheaply. It was left to Goodman and Sam Gilliatt to try and salvage the game when they came together at 11 for 3. The pair recovered the situation adding 57 to the total and seemed in control when Gilliatt was trapped LBW to the penultimate ball of Gordon Downham’s spell. Hugh Dodd played well in a supporting role to Goodman as the pair accumulated the highest partnership of the day – 86 runs. Bosham now needed just 20 from the remaining three overs. However, any hope of victory quickly evaporated as Colin Henderson was first run out and the Dean dismissed Goodman LBW and cleaned up in his final over with a hat-trick.

HCL SE2: Bosham vs Southampton Travellers

Duncan Barratt and Martin Farrell snatched a seemingly certain victory away from Southampton Travellers in a dramatic finish to the match. Southampton Travellers had amassed 158 for six and needed just fifteen runs from the final eight overs when the Bosham pair struck. Farrell clean bowled William Stroud for 28 to give Bosham hope. Barrett quickly followed with the wicket of Gareth Langley who was caught by Matt Baker for 8. With his very next ball Barratt struck again this time George Barratt did the honours and caught Steve Noton for a golden duck. Southampton Travellers had been reduced to 160 for nine and it was left to Bosham captain, Farrell, to clean bowl Johannes Staples and win the match.

Batting first, Bosham openers Barratt and Jez Abbott did a fine job in seeing off the new ball as they put together a 100 first wicket partnership. However, momentum quickly swung to the visitors with five wickets falling for just 18 runs. It was George Barratt and Colin Henderson that stopped the collapse and began to rebuild the innings. When Henderson was dismissed by Langley with the total on 151 it was left to Barratt to guide the Bosham tail and he worked hard making a vital contribution of 22 not out. The innings closed on a below par score of 171.

The Southampton Travellers innings got off to the worst possible start when Chris White was run out by Sam Gilliatt before he had even faced a ball. The next wicket to fall was Kevin Allen who was caught by John Barnett. Barnett ran backwards to take the catch but in the process fell badly and knocked himself out when his head hit the ground. The 67 year old veteran proved his resilience by staying on the field and within a few overs had recovered sufficiently to bowl the spell of the day finishing with figures of 10-2-18-3. His efforts setting up the opportunity for Barratt and Farrell to win the game and ensure that Bosham remain undefeated in the league this season.

HCL: Hambledon III vs Bosham

Duncan Barratt scored a century to help Bosham score a massive 299 and secure their third straight win. Barratt's scored his 102 runs at the historical Bat & Ball ground in Hambledon, the so called 'cradle of cricket'.

Hambledon skipper Martin Shinn won the toss and made the surprising decision to invite Bosham to have a bat. Opening the innings Barratt along with Jez Abbot took a while to adjust to the slow and low bounce with both doing well to get their bats down on a few shooters. Sam LeClercq made the first breakthrough of the day in the tenth over when he trapped Abbott leg before wicket. Last weeks hero Will Gamon picked up where he left off and was going so well until he uncharacteristically lofted a chance to mid-on where he was caught by Atkinson for 32.

Sam Gilliat announced his arrival at the wicket with a glorious straight six that soared far over the mid-off boundary. Gilliat continued the onslaught with partner Barratt until the 29th over when Alistair Gibson had Barratt stumped for 102. By this stage Bosham were already on top with 184 on the scoreboard. It was the perfect opportunity for Jim Callaghan to play one of his cameo roles and he did not disappoint. In the final ten overs of the day he smashed 62 runs that included 4 fours and 3 sixes.

Jack Gibson was the mainstay of the Hambledon reply. The 16 year old opened the innings and ended the day with a brilliant and and undefeated maiden century. He gave very few chances and kept his composure wonderfully as he closed in on his personal milestone.

It was a very frustrating afternoon for the Bosham bowlers. They dropped valuable bowling bonus points as they failed to breakthrough the Hambledon defences. Michael Rooke being the pick of the bowling ending with 3 for 21 from his ten overs. Hambledon closed the innings on 177 for 4.

HCL: Bosham vs Bursledon

Will Gamon inspired Bosham with a man of the match performance scoring 99 with the bat before taking 6 wickets with the ball. Bosham have made a great start to the season and this result takes them to the top of the South-East division Two table.

Gamon went into bat during the tenth with the score on 28. He never looked in trouble as he built a consummate innings that included thirteen fours. With the attacking Duncan Barratt (44) he put on 78 for the second wicket and helped Bosham into a commanding position. His innings ended frustrating one run short of a century when Vicky Maxwell scooped to take a fine diving catch at short mid-on. Some useful contributions from the tail especially George Barratt (19) ensured that Bosham set an imposing target of 210 for the visitors.

Perhaps feeling a little aggrieved at being caught out on 99 by a girl, Gamon ripped into the Bursledon top order with a tenacious spell of bowling. Within 10 over they had been reduced to 28 for 5. Bursledon showed some spirit and resilience with Mocking (14) and Eaton (20) adding some respectability to the Bursledon total before finally being dismissed for 82.

HCL: Farehaven vs Bosham

Martin Farrell claimed seven wickets as Bosham opened their League campaign with a win in a closely fought match with rivals Farehaven.

Bosham started the game with their top scorers from last season, Mark Allen and Nick Outram, both absent from the side. Despite a lack of pre-season practice the top order performed admirably. A well constructed innings of 61 from Will Gamon provided the foundation and others made useful contributions. Captain, Ryan Brotherton, was the pick of the Farehaven bowlers finishing with 4 for 36 from his 10 overs. The steady accumulation of runs allowed Bosham to set a reasonably competitive target of 186.

George Barratt and Will Gamon opened the bowling for Bosham and were both unlucky not to pick-up wickets in a spell that had a few catching opportunities pass tantalizingly close to fielders. It was not until the introduction of veteran bowler, John Barnet, that the first chance was taken when he claimed the wicket of J Brotherton. After his luckless spell Gamon was replaced by Farrell who immediately took a couple of wickets. Farehaven got themselves in to a position to win the game but a few overly attacking shot selections led to their downfall and Farrell was then beneficiary ending with his league best figures of 7 for 24.

Another poor batting display costs Bosham

Bosham slumped to their third successive defeat against Hambledon and effectively ended their chances of securing promotion this season. Their recent poor form with the bat continued as Bosham failed to chase down a target of 145 at the historic Bat & Ball ground in Hambledon.

After loosing the toss Bosham made a very positive start with the ball and soon had Hambledon reduced to 14 for 2. The batsmen continued to struggle with Martin Farrell going on to take 5 for 33. He was supported well by Tom Gilliatt and John Barnett who picked up one and two wickets respectively. The Hambledon innings closed on 144 for 9 with Bosham the far happier team at tea.

After the interval Hambledon had the best possible start when Carrs fired in great delivery to clean bowl Tom Gilliatt for a duck. Soon after Bascombe claimed the wicket of Sam Gilliatt and Bosham found themselves at 13 for 2. However, Mark Allen sparked a mini-recovery and seemed to have regained some form as he got on top of the Hambledon bowlers. He had accumulated 23 runs when he mistimed a drive and the ball looped up to be caught at extra cover. Despite David Goodman, Lawrence Hembrow and Colin Henderson all making reasonable starts they found the going tough and with the pitch deteriorating keeping up with the required run rate was challenging.

With wickets being taken regularly it needed someone to step up and score a fifty if Bosham had any chance of claiming a win. Hopes of a win dwindled as Hambledon maintained their grip on the game and continued to take wickets finally bowling out the visitors for 96.

Capital's withdrawl has really helped US. The big game this weekend against Portsmouth & Southsea will decide the title. If United Services keep the form they showed against us last week they might just grab a win. Their final game against Eastleigh is likely to be a 24 point home win.

United Services set up close finish to the season

Bosham slipped to their third defeat of the season against United Services after a disappointing batting performance at Oaklands Park.

United Services batted first and set a target of 178. Despite a lively looking wicket the Bosham bowlers were unable to extract any life out of the pitch and the anticipated bounce and lateral movement did not materialise. This allowed the batsman to take control and a solid opening partnership of 75 from Margetson and Toms laid the foundations for the innings. The introduction of John Barnett into the attack once again provided impetus for the Bosham attack as the veteran began taking wickets. His haul of 6 for 38 from 12 overs was vital in taking the momentum out of the innings and restricting United Services to a modest 178.

At the break Bosham were confident of making the target and despite loosing Barratt and Outram cheaply a third wicket partnership between Mark Allen and David Goodman threatened to turn the game in Bosham's favour. However, when Allen swept Clinton Rudder he did not connect properly and the ball flew high to Bartlett at third man who took the catch. Tom Gilliatt only lasted two balls and Goodman was bowled a couple of overs later to reduce Bosham to 84 for 5. Rudder and Saunders continued to pressure the batsmen with some controlled bowling and as Bosham slipped behind the required rate wickets continued to tumble. George Barratt held out at the end of the innings with an unbeaten 12 which not only gained Bosham an extra batting point it also denied United Services full bowling points which could be vital at the end of the season.

Going in to the last two weeks of matches there is now a five way battle for the title and the second place promotion spot. With Bosham hosting Portsmouth and Southsea on the final game of the season it could all come down to the final ball of the season.

After experiencing the highs of a great win last week Bosham came crashing down to earth with defeat against Purbrook. The second defeat of the season provides a stark reminder that promotion from SE-Division 2 is not going to be a formality.

A remarkable innings from Alex Cornborough turned the game on its head. Purbrook had looked a beaten side when Cornborough came out to bat. Some excellent bowling from Martin Farrell, Tom Gilliatt and John Barnett had offered the visitors very few scoring opportunities and Purbrook found themselves well behind the required rate. Purbrook had clambered their way to 111 for 5 from the first 36 overs leaving themselves to score 46 from the final six overs.

Until Cornborough came out to bat, batsmen on both sides had struggled to bat on an Oaklands wicket that was offering plenty of assistance to the bowlers. However, he had no problems and immediately went on the offensive smashing four sixes in as many overs to turn the game on its head. Purbrook went into the last over needing two runs and having two wickets in hand. Bosham had not given up and were offered hope when James Callighan bowled Harrison with his first ball. However, he could not repeat the feat and Purbrook grabbed the runs needed for victory.

After being inserted on a lively Oaklands wicket Bosham made hard work of their batting. Some good seam up bowling from Aaron Dean and Craig Marsh put pressure on the top order who were far from their fluent best.

Mark Allen was the first to go being caught at second slip. Nick Outram (24) and Duncan Barratt (29) battled for a while but when they were dismissed in the 17th and 18th overs respectively it sparked a collapse. From 75 for 1, Bosham were quickly reduced to 99 for 6.

Colin Henderson and Martin Farrell battled to stop the decline and were able to consolidate the position adding 32 for the 7th wicket. When Farrell was caught behind Henderson continued to play defiantly and with support from George Barratt, Bosham were able to post a respectable total of 158 at the close.

Bosham’s toil in the sun against Tangmere

Match Report Sunday 27 July 2008

Tangmere won the toss and elected to bat on a hot sunny day at Itchenor.

Jay Atkinson then proceeded to tie up one end with a tight opening bowling spell of only 13 runs off seven overs. Jack Hardman also bowled well from the other end for one wicket for 26 off six overs.

However Tangmere marched on and reached 94 for one wicket but Bosham increasingly put the brakes on Tangmere’s run rate and they slowly moved to 115 for 2 wickets off 30 overs.

Bosham’s Noel Kithakye produced a controlled marathon spell of 13 overs, 3 maidens, 1 wicket for 39. Jamie Cox’s spin spell figures of nine overs, producing figures of one wicket for 57 runs did not properly reflect the good quality of his bowling.

However Tangmere’s next nine overs produced 75 runs as Bosham’s fielding wilted in the baking conditions and Tangmere reached 190 for 3 wickets.

Bosham ‘s opening batsmen produced a strong reply and with George Barratt strong in defence and Jay Atkinson carrying over his fluent stroke making from the previous week. However when Jay Atkinson fell l.b.w. for 34 runs wickets fell at regular intervals.

Bosham failed to cope with the spin of Tangmere’s S Golder who produced a fine spell of 7 wickets for 34 runs off 12 overs. Noel Kithakye with a quick fire 14 was the only other batsman to reach double figures.

George Barratt struggled on and was last man out for 40 runs, as Bosham reached 128 runs.

Match Report Sunday 20 July 2008

Rogate proved too strong for the young warriors of Bosham at Itchenor.

Bosham asked Rogate to bat but toiled against an opening partnership of 149 made in 22 overs.
However Bosham fought back and Jamie Cox and Sam Evans took two wickets apiece to reduce Rogate to 180 for five wickets by the 29th over. Their bowling was assisted by some good fielding, the Gibbs twins performing particularly well.

However Rogate took control at the death of their innings, and their last six overs produced 71 runs without loss and they reached 251 for 5 wickets.

Bosham’s reply struggled at the start and they staggered to 8 for three wickets, Rogate’s opening bowlers recording 1 wicket for no runs off of six overs, and 2 wickets for 8 off six overs.

However Tony Droar was then joined by Jay Atkinson and carried the score to 41 before Tony Droar was stumped.

Jack Hardman was then struck on the elbow and took no further part in the match. However Jay Atkinson produced a fine array of strokes and assisted by Sam Evans Bosham reached 69, before five wickets then fell for only 17 runs.

Jay Atkinson remained not out on 55, his maiden adult half century, and Bosham finished on 86 all out.

It's been a long time since we played a game like this

There are two overs remaining, 11 runs required, George Barratt on strike and only Laurence Tait and Ed Richardson still to bat. It is the culmination of a 220 run chase on a baking hot afternoon at Bishops Waltham.

Mark is pacing up and down the mid-wicket boundary rope, Hugh can hardly contain himself in the scorebox, Paul is busy calculating the required rate down to 6 decimal places, Duncan sneaks around to the opposite side of the ground like the expectant father and David is preoccupied with reassuring Laurence of his batting strategy should he be required to bat.

Ali Gage, aptly described on the BW website as right arm bad-tempered used to be quite fast, had already bowled out a maiden to George in his previous over. He now decides to add to the pressure by bringing in a couple of fielders and Lawrence Hembrow, at the non-strikers end, offers George some final advice.

Tension mounts as Gage runs in to deliver the next ball. Seemingly oblivious to the pressure, George dances down the wicket, thankfully ignoring any advice Lawrence may have offered and drives the ball beautifully, straight back through mid-on for four. Immediately the ball crosses the line, Paul chirps in from his umpiring position at square leg, with the revised run rate.

Gage reassesses the situation and counters by dropping his fielders back. His next delivery is met with similar treatment with the ball racing towards mid-off but this time a desperate chase cuts it off and only two runs are claimed. Now the required rate is down to 0.625 runs per ball. (thanks Paul)

By this stage the bowler is demonstrating his northern trait to moan a little. However, George is now enjoying himself and when the next delivery strays a little down leg side he nonchalantly clips it of his pads and sends it hurtling over the mid-wicket boundary.

No need for any calculations now as one run is required from the last seven balls and George easily works a single to win Bosham the game.

A brilliant effort and definitely one of the best games Bosham have played for many years and as much for being a great all-round team effort as the final result.

Earlier in the day Bishops Waltham had built their innings around two big partnerships. Wiseman (53) and Tromons (45) accumulated 82 runs for the third wicket. The dismissal of Wiseman brought Pratt to the crease and he hit a rapid fire 65 in a partnership of 87. George made an important breakthrough in claiming Pratt's wicket and consequently the Bishops Waltham innings stuttered towards the end. Wickets fell quickly with George taking four and Martin three as the innings closed on 220.

The Bosham reply got off to a terrible start when the prolific Mark Allen was dismissed for just 15. With Nick Outram deserting the side in favour of an afternoon at the Rose Bowl, Paul Beynon stepped-up to bat at number three but unfortunately he immediately followed Mark for a duck. A partnership from Duncan (65) and David (49) rescued the team from their shaky start and set the foundations for the run chase. However, when this pair had been dismissed it fell to Lawrence to guide Bosham towards their target. First batting with Martin and then George his unbeaten innings of 35 was a crucial part of the victory.

Old Hambledonians become the latest victims

An unbeaten century from Nick Outram guided Bosham to another vital win against Old Hambledonians. The result, along with top of the table Portsmouth & Southsea beating third place Ryde in a closely fought match, means that Bosham have widened the gap to third place.

Bosham took to the field with only nine players after some last minute withdrawals. Despite a tidy opening spell from both Michael Rooke and Martin Farrell that resulted in a couple of wickets the Old Hambledonians batsmen were exposing the gaps in the field. Clarke (54) and Alsop (56) were the mainstay of the innings and their partnership tested the resolve of the Bosham side.

However spirits did not drop quite as much as a few catches. Duncan Barratt provided the key breakthroughs first bowling Alsop and then having Clarke caught at mid-off by Mark Allen. Martin and Rookey came back in to the attack to bowl the final 9 overs of the innings. The pair took a couple of wickets a piece to restrict the visitors to 193 from their 42 overs at the close.

After the interval Bosham knew that if they continued their good form with the bat the target would be reached comfortably. Despite an early set back as Duncan was again trapped LBW the top order delivered again. Rain Man led the way as he set about the opening bowlers in his normal aggressive style. He was supported well by Mark Allen (30) and David Goodman (27) as Bosham stayed ahead of the required run rate.

Old Hambledonians failed to take some difficult catches that may well have changed the course of the match and their heads dropped and Bosham closed in on victory with five overs to spare. Fittingly, the winning runs were scored by Nick with a straight drive for four that also brought up his second century of the season.

Travellers sent packing

This week it was the turn of Duncan Barratt to take the lead as the other members of our top four suffered rare failures. Duncan hit a crucial 55 as Mark (11), RainMan (14) and David (11) contrived to give away their wickets. Between them they have now scored 1221 of the 1517 Bosham have totalled in the league this season.

Bosham had been invited to bat on an Oaklands wicket that was looking very green after the rain earlier in the week. The Southampton Travellers bowlers were endeavouring to gain the advantage from the seaming ball and must have been delighted to make three early breakthroughs. However, Will Gammon making his first appearance for Bosham, never looked troubled as he built a solid innings batting at number five.

Will, who lost the services of Duncan when he was triggered LBW to the bowling of Lock, assumed control and batted well with Laurence and Hugh to progress the score towards 200 and maximum batting points. When Will was out for 63 the score had progressed to 181 but the reintroduction of Lock in to the bowling attack had a devastating effect on the tail. Lock quickly cleaned up the last remaining four batsmen and the innings closed on 186 all out.

The last time Bosham had posted a sub-200 target at Oaklands they were beaten by Ryde so it was vital that they made a good start. George and Martin duly supplied that good start making immediate inroads in to the Southampton top order. Martin clean bowled the top three and George had Chapman caught by Hugh.

Hugh took this catch immediately after dropping another chance which he deflected and then contrived to juggle at least six times while making a desperate dive and having it drop tantalising out of reach and on to the ground.

Barney bounced back from his drubbing at Burridge to resume normal service as he collected another three wickets to contribute to his tally of twenty for the season. However, it was the introduction of Will in to the attack that finished off the Travellers resistance as he took three wickets in three overs to clear up the tail and assure Bosham of their ninth win of the campaign.

The result means Bosham close the gap slightly on Portsmouth & Southsea at the top. Meanwhile Ryde slipped up against United Services and drop two places to fifth.

Colts Cricket in Priory Park

It looks as though the weather will be more cricket friendly tonight, so the planned games and training in Priory Park will go ahead.

We will aim to meet around 1745, with a view to starting at 1800.

Some of our Under 10's will be involved in a schools Kwik-Cricket Tournament in Priory Park today, so best of luck to them.

A reminder to those parents who have filled in CRB forms - Bring them along with the relevant forms of ID, and hopefully these can then be checked and sent off.

Bosham walloped at Westbourne

Bosham suffered a heavy defeat at Wesbourne.

Bosham asked Westbourne to bat and Jay Atkinson once again produced a steady spell of 1 for 21 in his eight overs. Ollie Mann fought hard to produce figures of 3 for 44 off his eight overs, and none of the bowling attack disgraced themselves.

However P Dicken of Westbourne took advantage of the tendency of the Bosham bowlers to bowl to his strengths on the leg side and he plundered a short boundary to reach 93 runs, although no other Westboune batsman exhibited such dominance.

Bosham stuck to their task in the field , with Adam Burley and Matt Price prominent and Jamie Cox making a promising wicket keeping debut. Westborne finally reached 241 for 8 off their forty overs.

In reply Bosham started badly losing two wickets for 8 runs. Ollie Mann and Jamie Cox seemed to have started a revival in moving the score to 26. However eight wickets then fell for only 6 runs as Bosham slumped to 32 all out.

However spirits revived when Westbourne hosted a sausage and chips supper at the Cricketers, and all enjoyed watching Fedderer and Nadal slugging out their five set Wimbledon final.

Colts Cricket Update

Dear Everyone

After consultation with Priory Park and looking at the weather forecast, it has been decided to postpone tonights games and training in Priory Park until next week.

Due to the heavy rain today, and forecast for more showers later, it would be too slippery to conduct the games safely.

We will attempt to run with the same arrangements next Monday 14/7/08: Meet at Priory Park at around 1745, for an 1800 start.

Apologies for cancelling (and the British Summer....), but both sides felt it would be safer this way.

There will be no training at Bosham tonight for the same reasons.

Burridge beaten again

Nick Outram scored a magnificent 151 and Ben Hembrow took six wickets on debut to help Bosham to a resounding win over Burridge II XI. The maximum points victory maintains pressure on top place Portsmouth & Southsea II XI who dropped a couple of bonus points in their victory over Netley Sports.

Nick dominated the Burridge bowling striking 8 sixes and 13 fours after coming in to replace Duncan after he was very harshly adjudged LBW to the bowling of Candy. Bosham’s highest scoring league batsmen had started this season in terrible form having scored only 14 runs before last weeks match when he rediscovered some form and scored a fifty. This week he was back to his best and plundering the bowling to all corners of the ground. The Burridge bowlers had no answer and contributions from Mark (52) and David (38) added to their misery.

Weather conditions deteriorated slightly for the Burridge innings as an increasingly strong breeze made bowling difficult. However, with the luxury of such a large total to defend an attacking field was set as the wickets needed to secure maximum bowling points were sought.

Martin had an early breakthrough clean bowling Wright but it was the introduction of Ben Hembrow into the attack that made all the difference. The Burridge batsmen could not live with his pace and he soon claimed the crucial wickets of White (42) and then Coles (44). From then on the Burridge resistance capitulated with Ben collecting a total of six wickets. This was opportune because running up a slope and bowling in to the wind at the other end was proving a challenge. This was best demonstrated by the normally reliable Barney being hit for six consecutives fours from one of his overs.

A Low Blow for Bosham

The Young guns of Bosham crashed to a five wicket defeat at Lodsworth.

Bosham’s decision to bat first backfired when star batsmen Nick Scutt fell to the first ball of the match, and Owain Chapman fell to a wonder catch, and other batsmen could not cope with a wicket with frequent low bounce.

Bosham stumbled to 10 for four wickets, and 31 for five before Ollie Mann and Jim Callaghan produced the longest stand of the innings to move the score to 60 for six. Jim Callaghan became the only batsman to reach double figures with a well struck 54, as Bosham totalled only 75 runs.

However, Lodsworth were not to have their victory cheaply, as Bosham bowled and fielded well.

Jay Atkinson produced a hostile spell of 2 for 15 in six overs, while Jack Hardman after a shaky start, improved greatly and produced a fine spell of 2 for 30. Len Gough weighed in with a useful contribution of 1 for 12. And Jamie Cox, whilst not taking a wicket, had the batsmen in frequent trouble with his leg spin.

Lodsworth struggled to 64 for 5 and despite several close shaves lost no further wickets in passing the Bosham total without further loss.

Ordnance Survey vs Bosham

Bosham put on a master class of batting as they dominated in their game against Ordnance Survey. Bosham claimed maximum points as they posted a season high total of 281 before bowling out the opposition for just 121.

Mark Allen and Duncan Barratt dominated the bowling in an opening stand of 103. Barratt had scored 51 when he was caught by Edara but his dismissal simply allowed Nick Outram a welcome opportunity to rediscover his batting form. He seized the chance and quickly went on to score a fifty before being bowled by Homewood. In the meantime Allen was compiling yet another big score but just as he tried to up the tempo to end his innings with a flourish he too was bowled by Homewood for 83. However, in stepped James Callaghan to round off an excellent batting performance with a scintillating 45 from just 19 balls.

The effects of the long afternoon in the field were evident as Ordnance Survey started their innings in a lack lustre manner. George Barratt and Martin Farrell both took early wickets as pressure was exerted on the batsmen. A superb spell of bowling from the veteran John Barnett ensured that Bosham were able to claim maximum bowling points. In a spell of 11 overs Barnett took six wickets for the cost of just 26 runs and this all after splitting open a finger while attempting a caught and bowled in his first over.

A Breeze for Bosham

Bosham breezed to a winning draw against visitors Landford on a blustery day at Itchenor.

Bosham batted first and a solid opening stand between Nick Scutt and captain John Strudwick produced 79 runs. Jay Atkinson made a bright start but fell to a controversial lbw dismissal.

However, Nick Scutt and young Jack Hardman then produced a 95 run stand , before Nick Scutt was eventually bowled for a fine 120. Supported by John Barnett, teenager Jack Hardman plundered the Landford bowling to reach his first half century, finishing on 67 not out and Bosham completed their innings on 220 for only 3 wickets.

When Landford batted Jay Atkinson tied up one end with a well controlled 9 over spell, bowling into a difficult wind. He finished with creditable figures of one for fourteen. At the other end promising
teenager James Cox also bowled extremely well and took 3 wickets for 25 runs in 8 overs.

In the field Len Gough and Matt Knapman took smart catches, and Matt Knapman also secured a run out with a direct throw at the stumps.

Landford batsmen fell cheaply ,but occupied the crease for long periods. Bosham could not dismiss aggressive left handed batsman Richard Wiseman who reached 74 before being bowled with the last ball of the match by captain John Strudwick. Landford finished on 153 for 6 wickets.

Work starts on the new cricket pavilion

Work started on digging out the foundations for the new pavilion on Thursday. Colts and a few of the senior players gathered to celebrate and have their picture taken for the local press.

Allen the key against Compton

Mark Allen fired Bosham to a crucial win over divisional rivals Compton with an unbeaten 98. He’s now scored 381 from his five innings this season and was in faultless form as he led the run chase. He secured victory for Bosham with four balls to spare with a trademark sweep for four. The result consolidates second place for Bosham behind Portsmouth and Southsea but means Compton slip three places down to sixth.

With Oakland's Park unavailable Bosham had the pleasure of hosting this game at Goodwood's ground. Despite the damp conditions Compton decided to bat and were immediately contained by accurate bowling from George Barratt and the captain. Pressure mounted on the batsmen as they found it hard to score runs and this was compounded by another good spell of bowling from Barney. At the end of 36 over the score stood at a very uncompetitive 120.

Compton, led by Francis (57no) and Middleton (26), added a vital 55 from the last six overs. Bosham struggled to maintain their accuracy in the light drizzle and the batsmen rode their luck to post a competitive total of 175.

Despite some very gloomy weather during the tea interval it cleared sufficiently to allow the game to restart on time. Mark and Duncan Barratt opened the innings in positive mood until Middleton trapped Duncan lbw for 30. Rain Man continued his poor run of form and was dismissed quickly lifting Compton's spirits.

Mark and David batted sensibly compiling a 30 run partnership but when David was caught at mid-on by Stickley the game was still very much in the balance. With twelve overs remaining Bosham needed to score at a rate of 5.5 per over.

As Bosham fell behind the rate and Compton were in the ascendancy, James Callaghan proceeded to hit two enormous sixes to swing momentum back towards Bosham. He then attempted a third but was caught by Barclay. The tension and excitement rose on both sides but Mark calmly held his nerve and guided the team home with four balls remaining.

Capital punished

While we bounced back from last weeks defeat to Ryde with an emphatic 9-wicket win over Capital our divisional rivals Ryde and Compton were playing each other in match that ended as a tie. It all means Bosham jump straight back up to second place in the league.

A fine spell of bowling from Barney decimated the Capital middle order and set-up a comfortable run chase. He ended the day taking five wickets for 36 runs.

With a highly unconventional approach to batting, Swain and Palmer had put on almost fifty runs for the second wicket when Barney was introduced into the attack. He made an immediate impact having Palmer clean bowled and then proceeded to take four more wickets in his next nine overs.

There were signs that it was going to be a good day in the field for Bosham when wicket keeper, Laurence Hembrow, missed a sharp chance only to have the ball hit him in a sensitive part of his anatomy. As he keeled over in anguish the ball lodged in his midriff and he was able to make the catch. I think the next time Laurence deputises for Hendo he should familiarise himself with the secret signal handbook!

Laurence's dedication rubbed off on his team mates as not a single chance was put down and a total of six catches were taken as Capital were dismissed for 100.

Bosham were always in full control as they knocked-off the runs with ease. The only setback was when Duncan Barratt pulled a hamstring while attempting a quick run and was forced to retire hurt.

It makes a change to have something new to report. Unfortunately, the news is that we lost and that is something that has not happened for almost a year. Our last defeat was against Netley on 9th June 2007.

This time the team doing the damage was Ryde II and in particular Cameron Mitchell who made an unbeaten 118 to secure a seven wicket victory over Bosham. It means we slip from first to third in the table.

Ryde set up their victory with a fine bowling and fielding performance that restricted us to just 178. The afternoon had started with a wild over from Dan Gordon who conceded 11 runs in wides and byes. He was replaced after two overs by Angus Birkin. In tandem with Ryde captain, Daniel Furmidge, they bowled a very accurate spell from which the Bosham batsmen struggled to score.

Duncan was bowled by Furmidge trying to force a good length ball and Laurence was run out by a direct hit that typified an excellent performance in the field by Isle of Wight side.

With just 12 overs of the 42 over allocation remaining, Bosham had only amassed 88 runs. Mark and David then began to enjoy some success as they went on the offensive and their urgency was having some impact which meant 200 was looking achievable.

Ryde made a significant breakthrough having David caught by Birkin and then immediately followed this up by dismissing Mark. This took all of the momentum out of the Bosham innings and Hendo grafted with the middle order to advance the score to 178 at the close.

Defending a relatively low score on the Oaklands Park wicket was always going to be difficult and likely to require some early breakthroughs. The Bosham openers George and Martin did create some chances early on but the Ryde openers rode their luck as a couple of inside edges went tantalising close to the leg stump. However, all of the bowlers struggled to exert any pressure by bowling too many loose deliveries.

Cameron Mithcell made the most of this luck and as he grew in confidence he started to punish the bowling attack with a fine display of shot making. He offered only one half-chance to Laurence who made a superb attempt diving full stretch at point but he was unable to hang on. Bosham tried in vain to stem the flow of runs and Mithcell guided his team home with three overs to spare.

Bosham defeat Denmead to stay top

Some entertaining calypso cricket from Duncan and an authoritative innings from David ensured Bosham maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a five wicket win over Denmead.

With Mark and Nick Outram just chipping in 17 runs between them it was down to the rest of the side to chase down the target of 123 runs. Duncan started in fine style by smashing 12 runs from the first over. "Not often I see someone pulling a delivery from wide outside the off stump for six in the first over of an innings", Mark said afterwards. Considering who Mark has been opening the batting with, I guess not.

Duncan continued to bat aggresively until he was undone by the bowling of Trevor Wright for 41. Laurence and Hugh did not stick around for long and at 85 for 5 the game was precariously poised. Fortunately Hendo thrived in his new batting role and supported David as the pair put on an undefeated partnership of 40 for the sixth wicket.

A boundary of the last ball meant that the an extra batting point was gained and Bosham finished the day taking 23 out of a possible 24 points.

Earlier in the match, Bosham produced a comprehensive bowling performance to dismiss the visitors for 123. Martin taking the first three wickets and being helped by a spectacular diving catch by Hendo to dismiss Dean.

As the Rain Man decided to park up on the M25 for an hour during his journey to Oaklands he was unavailable to bowl when George finished his opening spell. This gave an opportunity to Laurnece to bamboozle the Denmead batsmen with his leg spin. He duly took the opportunity and rather than just fill-in in for a few overs he produced an excellent spell of bowling taking four wickets for only 35 runs.

Denmead were dismissed for 123 using only 30 overs of their allocated 42 that left a lot of the Bosham bowling options unused!

It looks like the Council have made a fairly good job of their winter renovations and used a little less sand this year.

Still a bit bumpy on the outfield though!

It's two from two as Bosham start the season well

Eastleigh & Otterbourne vs Bosham

Back in July 2005 we took a battering from Eastleigh & Otterbourne as they cruised to an easy 9 wicket victory.

That day, Barney made the Observer back page because it was the first game he had missed through injury in 48 years. This time around, he was a no show because he was off watching Pompey win the FA Cup for the first time in 59 years. So much for his philosophy of 'I'd always rather be playing than watching'.

By drinks in the first innings, Bosham's decision to ask Eastleigh and Otterbourne to bat looked a little dodgy. Clarke and Poole had put on 96 and the expected life from the green top wicket was prooving elusive to find. Thankfully, Stuart Ward the E&O captain was heard to tell his opening batsmen to get a move on. It proved to be inspirational advice but for Bosham rather than E&O.

Straight away, Poole fell victim to a very full length (short beamer) delivery from Rain Man when he pulled it straight to George Barratt on the mid-wicket boundary. George having only just been moved in to position.

Clarke was out soon afterwards and wickets began to fall reguarly as E&O collapsed to 146 all out.

At one point the whole Bosham team took a collective gasp as Stuart Ward skyed his first delivery and everyone realised that the ball was heading straight down the throat of Paul Beynon. Never shy of reminding everyone that he had forgotten to put in his contact lenses and considering his failed attempt in very similar circumstances against Netley the week before, the renaissance man held on. The whole team breathed again and Paul was able to explain very eloquently to the rest of the team his thoughts as the ball was coming towards him....

Loosing Hendo and Rain Man for ducks did not deter our batsmen from their pursuit of the 148 runs needed for vicotry. Mark continued his fine form as he added another 92 runs to his seasons tally of 212. David Goodman also contributed a fine 46 not out as some of winter exploits in the nets started to pay dividends.

The evening passed without incident and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, except perhaps the head coach who seemed a little stressed.

Netley hosted Bosham in the league season opener. Bosham had a score to settle after under-performing in the corresponding fixture in 2008 that allowed Netley to go the whole season undefeated and cost Bosham any chance of winning the divison.

There were several star performances on show but none less than Mark Allen who started where he left off last season scoring an emphatic 120 that included 18 fours and 2 sixes.

Duncan Barratt, making his debut for the league side, also joined in the fun smashing a quick fire 33 in a partnership of 89 with Mark. The nine over spell turned the momentum of the innings after, having been put in to bat, Bosham lost early wickets.

When Duncan was caught behind (the replays showed off of arm and then ear) Mark carried on his merry way. He was finally stumped by Crabtree from the bowling of Patrick with the score on 174.

The Bosham tail got the team past the 200 mark ensuring they collected the full batting bonus points and setting a reasonable target.

However, the last few runs did not come without incident. The following took place much to the amusement of the Bosham team:
The Netley batters were subjected to a torrid time from the Bosham bowling attack.

George Barratt was producing plenty of away swing as his left arm over bolwing caused the batsmen lots of problems. At the other end, Martin Farrell was able to get much more pace and bounce out of the wicket than any of the Netley bowlers and this caused a little discomfort and pain for the batsmen.

David Goodman replaced George after his six over spell and continued the good work. Despite some fielding faux-pas that allowed the batsmen to escape being caught on five separate occasions (more of that in another post maybe), Netley never really got themselves in to contention.

It was left to Barney and Laurence Hembrow to wrap-up the innings and secure a maximum points victory for Bosham.

Special mention must go to Hendo, who made up for abject batting display with five catches and a stumping. Claims of this being a record are still to be verified by the Club Historian.

Netley are champions despite another maximum from us against Waterlooville

It's all over for the season. We finished second. Netley hung-on against Burridge IV's for a 23 point win and remained unbeaten for the season.

More later on our fabulous performances but for now the official report...

Mark Allen finished the season with a superb all-round performance that summed up both his and Bosham's season perfectly. First he anchored the Bosham innings scoring 90 on a green-top pitch that was offering plenty of assistance to the Waterlooville bowlers. Nick Outram (28) and Tom Gilliatt (34) were the other top scorers helping Bosham to post a total of 219.

Allen then turned his hand to bowling. Replacing Gilliatt in the 23rd over he skittled the opposition with his canny slow right arm bowling claiming six wickets for just 20 runs and reducing Waterlooville to 139 all-out. This was Bosham's thirteenth win of the season and sets a new total points league record for the division of 310 which is even more remarkable considering the weather this summer. It was however not enough to overhaul Netley Sports. Final positions in the Hampshire League are calculated on average points per game and with Netley winning the head-to-head game against Bosham in week six and remaining unbeaten for the rest of the season they finish as worthy champions. Both teams will be promoted to South-East Division 2 next season.

Much of Bosham's success this season has been founded on having a stable top order batting line-up. The team has batted first on eight occasions and dominated in six of these when they have scored over 200 to secure maximum batting points. The total runs for the season of 700 scored by Allen is a league divisional record a great personal achievement. Altogether those "top-four" batsmen, Colin Henderson, Mark Allen, Nick Outram and David Goodman have scored over 80 percent of the teams runs.

Too much rain at Oaklands

Bosham were defeated by the weather this weekend as they looked to take maximum points against Locks Heath III XI in the penultimate fixture of the season.

The game got underway in cloudy and overcast conditions and despite the set back of losing Hugh Dodd for a golden duck Bosham made an excellent start. Nick Outram fired his way to a century and Mark Allen took on the supporting role scoring an unbeaten 52.

The weather continued to deteriate and rain had already caused the players to leave the field twice when play was finally abandoned for the day with only 27.2 overs bowled and the score on 181 for 1.

With Neltey playing away to Vospers in a game that was bound to be cancelled it means that Bosham go in to the final game needing to score eight points more than the league leaders. In reality it will mean that Burridge IV's will need to beat Netley and Bosham will need to beat Waterlooville III's for Bosham to win the league.

Bowling of full pitched deliveries

Just in case this ever happens in one of our games....

Page 112 of the Hampshire Cricket League handbook states:

Any full pitched delivery that would have passed the batsmen above waist height in his normal stance should be called and signalled no ball by the umpire at the bowlers end. The appropriate procedures under the Laws of Cricket (2000 code) 42.7 and 42.8 should be invoked as necessary.

So what are the procedures 42.7 and 42.8?

Below is an extract from the MCC laws of cricket website for Law 42 (Fair and unfair play)

6 (b) Bowling of high full pitched balls
(i) Any delivery, other than a slow paced one, which passes or would have passed on the full above waist height of the striker standing upright at the crease is to be deemed dangerous and unfair, whether or not it is likely to inflict physical injury on the striker.
(ii) A slow delivery which passes or would have passed on the full above shoulder height of the striker standing upright at the crease is to be deemed dangerous and unfair, whether or not it is likely to inflict physical injury on the striker.

7. Dangerous and unfair bowling - action by the umpire
(a) As soon as the umpire at the bowler's end decides under 6(a) above that the bowling of fast short pitched balls has become dangerous and unfair, or, except as in 8 below, there is an instance of dangerous and unfair bowling as defined in 6(b) above, he shall call and signal No ball and, when the ball is dead, caution the bowler, inform the other umpire, the captain of the fielding side and the batsmen of what has occured. This caution shall continue to apply throughout the innings.

(b) If there is any further instance of dangerous and unfair bowling by the same bowler in the same innings, the umpire at the bowler's end shall repeat the above procedure and indicate to the bowler that this is a final warning.

Both the above caution and final warning shall continue to apply even though the bowler may later change ends.

(c) Should there be any further repetition by the same bowler in that innings, the umpire shall
(i) call and signal No ball.
(ii) direct the captain, when the ball is dead, to take the bowler off forthwith. The over shall be completed by another bowler, who shall neither have bowled the previous over nor be allowed to bowl the next over.
The bowler thus taken off shall not be allowed to bowl again in that innings.
(iii) report the occurrence to the other umpire, the batsmen and, as soon as practicable, the captain of the batting side.
(iv) report the occurrence, with the other umpire, as soon as possible to the Executive of the fielding side and to any Governing Body responsible for the match, who shall take such action as is considered appropriate against the captain and bowler concerned.

8. Deliberate bowling of high full pitched balls
If the umpire considers that a high full pitch which is deemed to be dangerous and unfair, as defined in 6(b) above, was deliberately bowled, then the caution and warning prescribed in 7 above shall be dispensed with. The umpire shall
(a) call and signal No ball.
(b) direct the captain, when the ball is dead, to take the bowler off forthwith.
(c) implement the remainder of the procedure as laid down in 7(c) above.

Bosham vs West Sussex Wanderers

I don't usually get the time to post any match reports for the Sunday side but it would be remiss of me not to recount the fabulously entertaining game we hosted at Ichenor against West Sussex Wanderers.

Now I know the mere mention of an entertaining game had you thinking, what has Strudders done this time? However, John was not playing in this game as he was nursing his hernia (thanks Jim for the diagnosis) that he aggravated during his fielding heroics the previous day at Fareham. So it was a surprise to see John at Ichenor when I turned up at 1:30 to set-up. Apparently the Colts game had gone a bit longer than anticipated (9:30am start) after they had decided to play a two innings game when Bosham were dismissed a bit cheaply in their first innings.

The Wanderers were true to their name and arrived in dribs and drabs. Under the insistence of their captain it would be a forty over game for which they were eventually ready to start at 2:45 albeit with only nine men. Number 10 and 11 wandered in later.

Bosham got off to a cracking start with father-and-son duo Duncan and George Barratt smashing the ball to all corners of the ground as they put on 115 for the first wicket. Well actually Duncan did the smashing and George picked up the occasional single but it was a successful strategy. It was not until the fifth over that I noticed that the boundary markers were still set-out for the colts game and a good six to ten metres in from the regular boundary. Duncan didn't seem to mind as he raced to 98 before snicking one to the keeper and being denied his first century for Bosham.

Matthew Burley was next to bat and faced his second over in customary style; block one, hit the next three balls for consecutive fours and then get bowled. Needing to quickly get my pads on ready to bat I excused myself from umpiring duties and asked Laurence to take over. It was Matt Knapman's turn to benefit from the Sunday rotation policy and get his chance to bat up the order. As he tried to help his first delivery on around the corner to leg he unfortunately missed and it hit him on the pads. Someone (it wasn't the bowler or keeper) from the opposition had the audacity to appeal for LBW and faster than a shooting bullet Laurence triggered Matt and sent him on his way. Much diplomacy was required from the beleaguered skipper trying to assure his team that Laurence does indeed know the LBW law and that his appeals while keeping wicket are not a lack of understanding but all part of the strategy.

The rest of the innings was uneventful as Bosham piled on the runs to amass 245 from 40 overs.

In reply the Wanderers were got off to a very cautious start battling against some good bowling from Matt Price and Matt Knapman. Len Gough, returning to the side after an absence of a year, and Sam Evans took over after eight overs and both continued to bowl very well. The batsmen were unable to take advantage of the short boundaries and were reduced to 76 for 5 from their first twenty overs. Sam and Len both being rewarded with two wickets each.

It was time to let some of our not so regular bowlers turn their arms over and at one end Matthew Burley bowled three overs. He finished with superb figures of 3-1-2-1 and was only taken out of the attack because Matt Knapman threw the ball so hard at the bowler that Matthew's hand went numb and he lost all sensation in his bowling arm.

Buoyed up from taking his first ever outfield catch it was a certain Mr Tait who was making his debut as a bowler from the other end. His first couple of overs were fairly successful and included only six wides. It didn't really matter that he started to bowl the second over wearing his cap what was pure genius was that for each good delivery Laurence led his own applause. And then it happened. From the eight ball of his third over he flighted a full length delivery that deceived the batsmen and clattered into middle stump.

Matt Price had replaced Matthew Burley and took two wickets in consecutive overs to reduce the Wanderers to 112 for 9. It would have been three wickets if the captain had not totally lost concentration and taken a regulation catch at slip. Then Matt lost his action and started bowling a bit waywardly. So much so that one delivery failed to pitch on the wicket and instead shot up the backside of Matt Knapman who was innocently fielding at silly mid-off. Pricey never recovered his accuracy after that and it was left to George Barratt to dismiss the final batsmen and bring an entertaining afternoon to a close.

Dean made a good start with his new team scoring a "fine 22" as he helped Aldwick to one of those strange Sussex phenomenons... a draw.

Seems he may be playing under a pseudonym to hide the fact that he bowls a bit as well.

With Netley wimping out because of the rain and not playing games against Denmead (currently eighth), Emswoth II, Southampton Travellers (currently fifth), Burridge III (currently third) our chances of seeing them slip up now rest with Vospers II and Burridge IV's.

Theoretically (and if we both play the last two games) we could still finish first if we score eight points more than them.

Vospers I's are currently third in County Division 4 while Burridge II's are mid-table in County Division 2. I guess we have to be hopeful that some of these senior sides have matches called off and drop some of their players down to play against Netley. As happened to us when we played Emsworth II's.

Could it be we'll be pinning our hopes on a certain wicketkeeper to help his old pals from Bosham when Burridge IV's play Netley;)

Bosham beat Fareham to keep pressure on Netley

Nick Outram hit an unbeaten 98 to set up Bosham's twelfth league victory of the season. The maximum points win maintains the pressure on Netley, who also had a convincing win against Portsmouth Post Office, at the top of the table. Going in to the last two games Netley need to score 40 from a possible 48 points to guarantee the title but any slips ups and Bosham will hope to capitalize.

Outram's 98 not out followed his 137 not out on the same Bath Lane ground last season and was a masterclass of aggressive hitting that allowed his side to set a challenging total of 218. Colin Henderson and Mark Allen had seen off the new ball spell and put together an opening partnership of 94 until both were dismissed in quick succession LBW to the bowling of Marchant. James Callaghan became Marchant's third victim when he was bowled in the 30th over with the score on just 136. The crucial fourth wicket partnership between Outram and John Barnett added 82 runs with Barnett scoring just four. Outram blasted the ball to all corners of the ground hitting six sixes and eight fours as he fell just short of a century. His score of 98 was enough to become the first Bosham player to score over 2000 league runs for Bosham.

Fareham mounted a spirited response as they attempted to chase down the target. Martin Farrell dismissed Knight with the fourth ball of the innings but then Whittle and Townsend put on 75 for the second wicket when Whittle was bowled by Outram just one short of his fifty. Despite taking a wicket Outram was struggling for rhythm and was warned in his fourth over by the umpire for bowling a dangerous full toss. When this happened again in his eighth over he was asked to stop bowling and Mark Allen stepped in to finish the over. However the incident did not seem to disrupt the Fareham batsmen too much and they continued to make progress moving to 103 from 20 overs. Some fine wicket keeping from Colin Henderson then turned the game. He made a couple of sharp stumpings from the bowling of James Callaghan, scampered to take a skied top edge to dismiss Clarke and then kept his cool to effect two run outs. Barnett finished off the game when he had Marchant caught by Outram at deep mid-wicket.

Matchtech game is cancelled

The Matchtech Captain called me this morning to cancel today's game as the outfield at their ground is too wet.

It would be all too cynical of me to suggest that they did not want to play the mighty Bosham and would instead prefer to take their chances of avoiding relegation from their remaining games, so I won't.

While I think the Hampshire Cricket League rules to rank divisions on the basis of average points rather than total points is in general a much fairer system it is on days like today that I think there should be some incentive to play games.

With Burridge hosting Netley just down the road lets hope that they do not suffer the same fate, get their game on and do us a huge favour.

Bosham make it ten wins with a great victory over Emsworth

Bosham produced one of their best all-round performances of the season to win their tenth game of season against Emsworth II XI. During the game Mark Allen broke the Bosham league record for the most runs scored in a season when he passed the 573 runs scored by Inshan Ali in 1998. Allen has been in fantastic form all season and passed the mark with a further five games of the season remaining.

With all of the rain that fell on Friday and Saturday morning it was quite an achievement to get the game started on time at Oaklands Park. Emsworth's first team, who play five divisions above in County Division 3, had their fixture called off so a few players dropped down to strengthen their second eleven.

Michael Rooke and Nick Outram bowled accurately for Bosham in an opening spell that restricted Emsworth to just 52 runs from 18 overs. However, it was only for the cost of one wicket with Shaun Woods being bowled by Outram. Martin Farrell and John Barnett were introduced into the bowling attack and continued to apply pressure. Emswoth had reached 86 from 28 overs when Barnett made the vital breakthrough having Bradley Miles, Emsworth's first team captain, superbly stumped by Colin Henderson. Mark Windeback was Barnett's next victim bowled for 46. The score progressed to 131 and with just six overs remaining Bosham were desperate to take wickets and claim more bowling points. Farrell obliged bowling Lee Johnson (31) and Mike Offord in consecutive balls to leave Emsworth five down. Bosham were on a role and Emsworth collapsed to 147 for 9 at the close with Barnett and Farrell claiming two more wickets apiece and finishing with 4 for 44 and 4 for 38 respectively.

Bosham started their reply positively and the high tempo was maintained by Allen and Outram, despite the early wicket of Henderson, who combined for a partnership of 71. Allen was the first to go caught behind by Howe off an attempted sweep shot for 34 and Outram soon followed when he was bowled in the next over by Shaun Offord. This gave Emsworth a glimmer of hope but David Goodman and Dean Holden put Bosham back on track taking the score to 125 when a ridiculous call by Holden resulted in Goodman being stranded and easily run out. However, Holden regained his composure and guided his team to victory with a fine 43 not out.

Bosham claimed 23 out of a possible 24 points to increase the pressure on league leaders Netley Sports.

Update 12:00 - the game will go ahead.

Fortunately, Chichester District Council have not called off the game tomorrow so the decision will be down to us. The latest weather forecast is not too bad for Chichester so there is a good chance we will still get a game in.

The results for week 11 are finally in and it seems that Netley only just sneaked a win against Locks Heath III XI.

You can only draw so many conclusions without reading a match report but it seems as if Locks Heath batted first and were bowled out for 143. However, in reply Netley lost nine wickets with a G Smith taking 5 for 33 as they struggled their way to 144.

It does however mean that they dropped three points compared to our one against Burridge and the gap has closed again.

In other results third place Burridge III XI lost to fourth place Hambledon and our next opponents, Emsworth, were beaten by Denmead. Southampton Travellers were in the runs as they comprehensivly beat Gosport with a performance we can only hope they will repeat next week against Netley.

Burridge vs Bosham scorecard

Bosham continued their excellent season with a crushing defeat of Burridge 4thXI. With 23 points collected to keep pressure on league leaders Netley Sports the game was all over by 5:30pm and the team was heading back to Bosham for some post match analysis in the Berkerely Arms.

Burridge were bowled out for just 95 in 35 overs with Michael Rooke (2), Martin Farrell (2), Joe Gilliatt (3) and Nick Outram (2) sharing the wicket taking duties. Only Thomas (23), Hallett (15) and Laine (13) made it in to double figures for the home side.

Despite Colin Henderson being caught by Harding without troubling the scorers Bosham did not have any trouble chasing down the total with Mark Allen again top scoring with 43 not out. Indeed, it was left to Allen to try and contrive his side maximum points from the day. With Bosham on 94 for 2 and chasing 96 to win if he could hit a six to take the team score to 100 it would earn the team a full seven batting bonus points rather than just six. Despite an excellent effort the ball fell short and crashed through the extra cover boundary for four.

Seven league games to go... can we catch Netley Sports?

Since our disappointing defeat to Netley Sports in week 5 of the season we have steadily been closing the gap on the leaders.

The Hampshire League works on an average score per game system. This means that although we have scored more points than Netley we are still behind on average as they have played less games.

In the chart above Bosham are represented by the red line and the gap to Netley has narrowed since week 5 as we continue to pick-up high scoring wins. The question remains whether we can catch them in the remaining seven weeks of the season?
